Things to consider when buying a safe

As the nation’s banking industry inhales billions of dollars in government support, the urge to hoard your cash at home might be pounding mightily. You wouldn’t be the only one, judging from the recent spike in sales of home safes.

Keeping loads of money around the house remains an ill-advised step, but a home safe can still be a way to guard against fires, floods and burglaries. Cherished old photos, legal contracts and passports can be difficult to replace.

The key to buying the right safe is knowing, what threats you want to guard against. Ultimately, no safes are foolproof — they simply come with varying degrees of protection.

“Safes are like insurance — the more protection you want, the more it’s going to cost,” said Jim Riccardi, east coast sales manager for Gardall Safe Corp., based in Syracuse, N.Y.

You won’t be the only one putting your belongings in a safe.

SentrySafe, the nation’s largest safe manufacturer, said sales were up as much as 50 percent over the last five months. They’ve since leveled off, but were still up as much as 10 percent in the first week of March from the same time a year ago, according to the Rochester, N.Y.-based company.

But before you join the rush, here’s what you need to know.

What size and style should I get?
Safes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The lightweight plastic ones you find in department stores are probably better suited for organizing rather than protecting your belongings.

To guard against burglaries, you’ll want a heftier safe that can’t be carted away easily. These might be the size of a microwave or even a mini refrigerator.

As a reference point, Gardall Safe Corp.’s most popular safe weighs about 85 pounds and measures roughly 17 inches on all sides. Depending on your needs, safes can be significantly larger and weigh upward of 300 pounds.

Generally, a heavier safe indicates it’s made with more steel and will be harder to break into with average household tools, Riccardi said.

“But no matter how heavy the safe is, we strongly suggest you bolt it to the floor,” he said. Be wary of cheaper safes that don’t have the bolt-down feature, he said.

The exception is if you opt for a security box instead of a safe. These are about the size of the metal cashier boxes you might see at a bake sale or flea market. They’re typically recommended only if you’re looking to protect the contents from fires, rather than burglaries.

On the other end of the spectrum are the more elaborate safes that appear in movies, which can be concealed behind paintings or in the ground.

These wall or floor safes usually need to be planned for when building a home. Otherwise, it can be expensive to hire a contractor to handle the installation.

What type of protection do I need?
Don’t assume all safes protect against fire and water damage. Those are features that should be spelled out on the packaging.

To guard against fires, look for safes tested by Underwriter Laboratories Inc. Those living in the West or other regions prone to wildfires might want the “UL 2-Hour” seal of approval, which indicates the safe can endure intense fires for up to two hours.

If your chief concern is house fires, the UL 1-Hour label might suffice, said Sondra McFarlane, a spokeswoman for SentrySafe.

Still, there’s no way to predict how long a house fire will last. Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City Fire Department, points out that the duration of a house fire depends on several factors, including the size of the structure and intensity of the blaze.

SentrySafe also offers safes that protect belongings against water damage; the label should state how long a safe can withstand being fully submerged in or sprayed by water.

If you want to take it a step further, Gardall offers safes tested by Underwriter Laboratories to withstand attempted break-ins by locksmiths armed with crow bars, torches and other tools. These safes can set you back between $900 and $2,200.

Generally, however, a safe shouldn’t cost that much.

Gardall’s most popular safe, which comes with one-hour fire protection, costs $375. A search on SentrySafe’s Web site for safes that provide fire and water protection turns up options costing between $210 and $530.

What types of locks are available?
Safes with dial combinations usually come with a set code, which can be reset by a locksmith upon request. You can set your own code — usually three to six digits — with electronic push button safes. Both options are equally secure, Riccardi said, so it boils down to personal preference.

If you forget your combination for either, you or your locksmith can call the safe manufacturer with the safe’s serial number to get the code or a reset code. The company might require a notarized request to ensure they’re not giving out the code to a burglar.

Key locks can be harder to find for heavy-duty safes, since the key would have to be very long for the thick doors, Riccardi said.

 What are the other options?

Even if you purchase a home safe, you might want to store certain valuables, such as family heirlooms, in a bank vault.

The average safe deposit box at a bank costs between $25 and $125 a year, said Dave McGuinn, president of Safe Deposit Specialists, a Houston-based financial consulting firm.

The contents of safe deposit boxes aren’t insured by the bank or FDIC. To protect against fires, floods, natural disasters or robberies, you might want to add a rider to your homeowner’s policy or get a separate policy altogether for the contents.

There’s generally no limit on how often you can access your goods. But since your access will be limited to bank hours, consider keeping certain items at home in a safe.

“Passports if you travel regularly, medical papers you might need on a Sunday,” McGuinn said. “Anything you use regularly or at a moment’s notice.”

Four Factors You Should Consider When Buying a Safe

When purchasing a safe there are four main points to consider before making a decision:

  1. Size or Capacity of the Safe
  2. Final Placement of the Safe
  3. Type and Degree of Protection
  4. The Price of the Safe

The first determination, size or capacity, is entirely dependent on what you are going to store in the safe. The best way to do this is to measure the largest items you intend to secure. Plan to buy a safe whose interior dimensions all for at least 25% more room. Be aware that the inside and outside dimensions of the safes vary considerably. You must allow for the body and the insulation of the safe. These two factors can reduce the inside size of a safe by quite a bit. The extra 25% will allow additional room for items you have forgotten to consider or new items you will want to add later.  Many safe buyers add up to 50% more room to plan for future growth.

The second determination, final placement of your safe, is dependent on how much space you have available and how you will move the safe to this location. Be sure to measure door widths and heights and compare to your safe outside dimensions. Also know that the combination lock and door hinges will add another 2″ – 4″ in size. Also, if you are thinking about moving a large heavy safe up or down stairs, be sure that the stairs (and the areas that the safe will be moved across) are strong enough to support this weight.

Remember, once you install the safe it’ll never get bigger, but you will always find more items you would like to protect.

The third determination, type and degree of protection, is dependent on the nature of the property that you wish to secure. You might start by asking your insurance company what safe ratings they require to provide you with coverage. Safes are built to meet certain fixed standards for either fire or burglary resistance. Non-negotiable paper documents and records usually can be housed in a fireproof safe. However, if the items are primarily valuables such as cash, bullion, coins or jewelry, then they should be stored in an appropriate burglary resistive safe. It is possible to make a burglary safe fire resistive by using small fire resistive inserts or composite materials. Fire safes, on the other hand, rarely offer any level of real burglary protection.

The last factor, price, is determined by the size and type of safe you wish to purchase. Prices can be anywhere from reasonable, for small fire safes, up to very expensive for jewelers safes. Just be cautious, if you find a great bargain on a new or used safe – pause a moment and consider – you may not have a true bargain at all! Don’t forget with a safe it’s true, “you get what you pay for.”   It is better to think of a safe as an investment not just a purchase.

What To Do if You Encounter A Coyote

The San Gabriel Valley has many acres of nature and wooded areas in which wildlife, including coyotes, live. Although most wildlife have adapted to our environment, there have been situations where coyotes have not adapted, resulting in fear among residents for the safety of their family and pets.

American Asset Protection ®’s number one priority is to protect and safety of the clients. The following information is provided below to assist you and your family if you should encounter any coyotes in the area.

Aggressive Coyotes
Aggressive coyotes are defined as those coyotes which are dangerous and attempt to hurt small children, adults, and domestic animals. If you encounter an aggressive coyote, please call 9-1-1 while the situation is occurring. The Police Department will respond, assess each situation, and take the appropriate measures to protect the safety of the community.

No Fear Coyotes
Coyotes characterized as showing “no fear” are those coyotes which are not frightened of people. These coyotes do not run away if they see or hear people, and tend to show up in your yard or porch looking for food. You are requested to contact the Security Department at 877-227-1688 Ext. 97 if you encounter this type of coyote. The Security Department will respond to all calls and obtain a report and contact Animal Control.

Sightings
If you happen to see a coyote wandering in or around the premises, please call the Security Department at 877-227-1688 Ext. 97. The Security Department is actively keeping record of coyote activity in the area which will assist Animal Control in managing the coyote population.

Safety Tips

 Do not feed the coyotes! Doing so can make them less afraid of humans and potentially more dangerous.
 Protect your pets! Coyotes will attack and kill cats, dogs, and livestock.
 Do not allow your pets to roam, especially at night.
 Keep your pets on a leash when walking them.
 Keep your pets inside at night if at all possible.
 Do not leave food or water outside for your pets.
 Protect livestock, especially chickens, young calves and sheep with fencing that the coyote cannot get through.
 If you observe coyotes in the area within 10 yards, throw rocks and make loud noises, encouraging the coyote to feel threatened when around people.
 If you or your pet is confronted by a coyote, use a loud authoritative voice to frighten the coyote. Throw rocks and become as big as possible, encouraging dominance on your behalf toward the coyote.
 Parents are encouraged to tell children to treat coyotes (as well as wildlife) as they would a stranger.
 Garbage should not be kept outside, and should be placed in secured tightly sealed containers. Cans should be cleaned, regularly with a chlorine bleach and water solution.
 Keep an air horn on hand which can be used to scare away coyotes, especially prior to letting pets out in the yard, or while walking along the canal.

MUL-T-LOCK

MUL-T-LOCK’s Patented Interactive Key Control System will give you the confidence you need to know that you are in total control of your keys. To understand MUL-T-LOCK’s Interactive System, you must first understand what “Key Control” means.

Good Key Control
Only the user and the people the user authorizes are able to obtain additional keys.

Bad Key Control
Anyone can obtain additional keys without any verification or requirements.

MUL-T-LOCK’s Interactive Key Control System is protected by a United States Utility Patent which lasts well into the next decade. Since it is patent protected no company can make imitation key blanks which will fit into the MUL-T-LOCK product line. Furthermore, MUL-T-LOCK has instituted a Key Control Procedure which all Authorized Service Centers must abide by. Over 90% of all keys in the marketplace are not patent protected. If a key is not patent protected other companies can manufacture that key blank and sell to whomever they please, and any Key Control Procedure instituted by the original manufacturer is void, thus leaving the consumer wide open for unauthorized key duplication.

Are your keys patent protected, if so for how long?

MUL-T-LOCK extends a Limited Lifetime Mechanical warranty to all of its customers, for all of its products. You truly have a Lock for Life. As an ISO9001 Quality Assured Company, MUL-T-LOCK Technologies understands the importance of quality and reliability. Made with the best materials, and by a trained, highly professional staff, all MUL-T-LOCK products are backed by a Limited Lifetime Mechanical Warranty on cylinders, locks, padlocks, and keys. Most manufacturers offer a 30 day or 1-2 year warranty on their locking products, if any at all. At the same time these products are made with inferior materials, which do not last over time and usage. The average life of a lock is: 7 years
The average lock cost is: $20.00
The average installation cost is: $50.00
So the total for 21 years is: $210.00
The hassle and aggravation of replacing a lock is: Priceless

How long are your locks warranted for?

Mul-T-Lock RESTRICTED KEYS

Mul-T-Lock CLIQ

Employers with many employees needing keys to access their workspace or inventory are always faced with a serious dilemma when a disgruntled employee leaves or is fired: does he have a copy of the key and should we have the locks changed? If the employee has signed for the key, and it’s a key that cannot be duplicated, then simply getting the one key back will resolve the situation.

In the same way, large organizations with many members that need access to the premises never know how many copies people have made of their keys. By using a key that cannot be duplicated without proper authorization, they retain control of who has access to their

building, thus eliminating the need to change the locks when someone leaves.

Even homeowners who give a key to a cleaning service run the risk of unauthorized copies of their keys. We specialize in providing restricted key solutions for situations like these. Access Lock is proud to offer all the products of Mul-T-Lock®. We are proud to be a Mul-T-Lock® factory certified service and installation center. We are one of only a handful of factory certified MCC (Mul-T-Lock® CLIQ® Service Center) Centers in the United States. We proudly sell and service Medeco and Schlage products including their restricted key solutions.
We also provide master key systems eliminating the need for a huge ring of keys. For example, a school may have 150 doors each having a different key. With a properly designed system, there can be keys that will open all the doors in various sections of the building allowing teachers and department heads to only have to carry one key. In addition there can be a grand master key that will open all the locks in a building. The goal is to control access to each door and allow only the authorized person(s) to enter.

After a detailed consultation, we will design, install and implement a master key system to your specification. In the implementation process, we will provide you with a procedure to issue keys only to the authorized users. Since we will be using restricted keys, all copies must be made at our shop, thus protecting the integrity of your system. Access Security is a certifed Mul-T-Lock Locksmith and performs both installation and service on all Mul-T-Lock products.

We Highly Recommend Mul-T-Lock Locks For your Home or Business

Home is our safe haven. It provides shelter, warmth, and protection. It is a place where we watch our children grow up. It is a place where we find comfort. It protects our possessions, but more importantly it protects us and our precious family members. Unfortunately, many homes are not as safe as the owner’s think:

Every 13 seconds a home is burglarized;
In more than 50 percent of all residential burglaries, entry is gained through a door; More than 85 percent of break-ins are committed by non-professional burglars, who are usually desperate and dangerous individuals; Fifty percent of all burglaries occur during the day.

Good quality doors and windows combined with quality locks and key control are your first line of defense against a break-in. Mul-T-Lock offers patented key control which prevents the unauthorized duplication of keys:

If you have a regular key, it can be copied at thousands of places that duplicate keys. However, Mul-T-Lock patented keys can only be duplicated by authorized dealers and only with the proper identification. In fact, Mul-T-Lock dealers must follow strictly enforced legal procedures when making a copy of a Mul-T-Lock key. They must match your identification, verify authorization, and keep a record of every key cut.

With Mul-T-Lock, you don’t have to worry that someone has a key that you don’t know about, and who might copy it to unlock your door.
